Circles Indy

Circles Indy seeks to inspire and equip our community to reduce poverty and remove the barriers that stand in the way to financial security. Poverty is more than a lack of material wealth, sometimes it means relying on family, friends and government assistance which can be dehumanizing. When people achieve financial security, they experience a surge of pride and confidence. Often, they say they have regained their dignity, their value, and their humanity.

At Circles Indy, we believe everyone can work together to reduce and eradicate poverty. The Circles model focuses both on what individuals can do to change their situations and on what society can do to remove the barriers that stand in their way.

Circles Indy was started in Indy in 2010 with sponsorship by The Julian Center through 2015. Since January 2016, a new nonprofit, BRiCKs Alliance Inc., is the 501(c)(3) home of Circles® INDY.

Building Relationships in Community is Key because we are better together. This is the inherent belief of BRiCKs Alliance, Inc., an intergenerational 501(c)3 organization that aims to influence the volunteering experience and build social connectedness that results in stronger communities.

At BRiCKs Alliance, we know that everyone has an inherent need to feel connected, but barriers exist. BRiCKS sponsors Circles Indy (a chapter of Circles USA) as a successful example of intentional, cross-community friendships that equip and inspire families to permanently move out of poverty and thrive.

HOW IT WORKS
Every Thursday (except holidays) we meet together for a meal followed by a meeting (along with free youth programming and childcare). Our meeting routine includes the following:

  • Announcements - we share upcoming activities, community events of interest, job opportunities, relevant news, reciprocity opportunities (needs and offerings), etc.

  • New and Goods - at the beginning of each meeting we share one thing that has happened to each of us within the last week that is new and good. This gives us the opportunity to focus on the positive, give encouragement, and celebrate successes.

  • Activity/Presentation - each week we plan an activity and/or facilitated discussion on a relevant topic and may invite a speaker from the community as well. It provides a time during which everyone can learn and reflect on others’ different perspectives.

  • Closing appreciations - gives us the opportunity to give and receive kind words for each other.
